Subsurface permeability contrasts control shallow groundwater flow dynamics in the critical zone of a glaciated, headwater catchment

چکیده

Groundwater flow direction within the critical zone of headwater catchments is often assumed to mimic land surface topographic gradients. However, groundwater hydraulic gradients are also influenced by subsurface permeability contrasts, which can result in variability and magnitude. In this study, we investigated relationship between shallow direction, topography, topography low units a catchment at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF), NH. We continuously monitored levels solum throughout several seasons well network (20 wells 0.18–1.1 m depth) upper hillslopes Watershed 3 HBEF. Water were four deeper wells, screened from 2.4 6.9 depth glacial drift C horizon. conducted slug tests across determine saturated conductivity (Ksat) materials surrounding each well. Results showed that under higher water table regimes, mimics but lower deviate as much 56 degrees topography. Under these conditions, instead followed top The interquartile range Ksat horizon was two orders magnitude than solum. Overall, our results suggest acted end members defining bounds variability. This suggests temporal dynamics should be considered when calculating hydrologic fluxes runoff generation studies underlain drift.

Scale effects on headwater catchment runoff timing, flow sources, and groundwater-streamflow relations

[1] The effects of catchment size and landscape organization on runoff generation are poorly understood. Little research has integrated hillslope and riparian runoff investigation across catchments of different sizes to decipher first-order controls on runoff generation. We investigated the role of catchment sizes on riparian and hillslope dynamics based on hydrometric and tracer data observed ...

the effect of using critical discourse analytical tools on the improvement of the learners level of critical thinking in reading comprehension

?it is of utmost priority for an experienced teacher to train the mind of the students, and enable them to think critically and correctly. the most important question here is that how to develop such a crucial ability? this study examines a new way to the development of critical thinking utilizing critical discourse analytical tools. to attain this goal, two classes of senior english la...

the effects of changing roughness on the flow structure in the bends

flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...

Temporal and spatial variations of shallow subsurface temperature as a record of lateral variations in groundwater flow

[1] In the present paper it is shown how profiles consisting of closely spaced ( 10 m) temperature measurements at shallow depth, obtained at several instances during one season, provide a detailed record of lateral variations in vertical groundwater flow. This is illustrated by a field study around the Peel Boundary Fault zone that cuts through the unconsolidated, siliciclastic deposits that o...

Effects of Thinning on Flow Peaks in a Forested Headwater Catchment in Western Japan

This study examined the changes in rainfall-runoff characteristics in the year prior to and after intensive thinning of 50% in number in a steep headwater catchment, covered with 46-year-old Japanese cedar and cypress in western Japan. The magnitude of event peak flow, event quick flow, event water yield, and event response time did not change after thinning. Because 70% of rainfall events had ...
